Shaping the Next Normal: New Horizons in Research Management

Research management is still a relatively new and evolving field; this evolution has been accelerated due to the global impact of COVID-19 on how we live, work and conduct research. This year’s ARMS conference theme embraces this change and fosters discussions about what the future will look like and the changes in practice that are happening or need to happen to effectively support the research endeavour now and in the future. The theme includes four sub-themes that focus on the key aspects of an excellent and impactful research, science and innovation sector: Research Priorities, Research Funding Challenges & Opportunities, Research Workforce, and Research Infrastructure.

Amber McEwen, REANNZ CEO, will be presenting the keynote session on the final day of the conference (Friday 9 September) - Defining the research infrastructure of tomorrow

Abstract:
REANNZ and national research and education networks (NRENs) from around the world act as a fundamental part of the global science, research and education system, connecting people, knowledge and capability to drive global collaboration and innovation.

Yet providing eResearch infrastructure in the ever-changing world of technology is an ongoing challenge.  How will eResearch infrastructure providers evolve to provide the capabilities and infrastructure that research and education organisations will need in the future?

In this presentation, Amber McEwen, CEO of REANNZ, Aotearoa New Zealand’s national research and education network (NREN), will share learnings from engagements with the community and colleagues overseas that look to answer this question.

During workshops with leading Aotearoa New Zealand researchers and in conversations with overseas infrastructure providers we have built a vision of how research may be done in the future and formed a view on how eResearch infrastructure needs to evolve as a result.  This keynote will walk you through these learnings and present a vision for the future of eResearch infrastructure.
